[post_content] => The existing car park to the front of the visitor centre is located at the site of an historic cotton mill previously constructed by Edward Chadwick in 1777 and leased to Richard Arkwright. Following significant damage to the mill in 1779 it was rebuilt two years later and used for calico printing, dying and bleaching.

The factory ran successfully till 1939 when all activity on the site was closed down and the site became derelict. The site remained derelict from this time until Chorley Council obtained derelict land grants in the 1980’s to restore the former mill lodges and create the recreational resource of Yarrow Valley Country Park.

Since the creation of Yarrow Valley Country Park the car park had fallen into a serious state of disrepair with significant areas of ponding being formed during normal rain fall events, Westlakes were commissioned to resolve the flooding issues and create a more efficient and formal parking area that was not only functional but also complemented its surroundings.

To realise the Client's brief we combined sustainable drainage techniques SUDS together with traditional highway construction methods to achieve the final scheme.

[post_content] => Westlakes were engaged for the delivery of infrastructure elements for a Container Handling Project at the Port of Workington. The Port of Workington is the only container handling facility in the 300 mile or so distance between the Mersey and Clyde.

In addition to a scope including Structural design and assessment, topographical survey, Environmental Action Plan, Site Waste Management Plan and CDM co-ordination, Westlakes were responsible for undertaking a flora and fauna study to establish what was present on the site. To support this a biodiversity management plan was produced, specifically relating to reptiles and blue butterflies, to maintain the environment and habitat during future development.
