Westlakes Engineering was established in Cumbria in 2004 by Andy Hooper to originally specialise in design consultancy to major industrial and energy clients in the UK. The company grew quickly and opened a second office in Preston in 2005, becoming a diverse engineering practice specialising in design consultancy to property and energy Clients.
In 2009 we expanded, opened our third office in Manchester, which strengthened our design services for the property sector. The company has further expanded since with the acquisition of an environmental engineering team and a specialist attraction safety team, such that we now offer services to Clients in the following areas:

The business has grown from a single member of staff in 2004 to 60 personnel across the 3 offices today. The senior management team comprises Andy Hooper (Nuclear, Whitehaven Office), Ahmad Saumtally (Nuclear and Utilities, Preston Office), Chris Pratt (Property, Manchester Office), Matt Short (Property, Manchester Office), Ron Dale (Attraction Safety, Manchester Office) and Sue Peacock (Finance Director, Preston Office). Many of the Directors worked together earlier in their careers and our collective experience goes back over 30 years.
Andy is a Civil/Structural/Geotechnical Engineer with extensive experience in the concept and detailed design and assessment of structures. This encompasses work within a variety of sectors, predominately Nuclear, but also including Commercial Property, Petro-chemical, and Infrastructure design such as Ports & Harbours and Roads & Bridges. Andy has 30 years’ experience in Engineering Consultancy.
Chris is a Chartered Civil and Structural Engineer with over thirty years experience, both in the UK and abroad. This encompasses work in both the public and private sector for the structural design of buildings. His career has covered many different sectors including commercial property, health, education, leisure, residential, energy and industry as well as defence and secure facilities.
Following her change in career path, Sue worked in private practice in Manchester, becoming Chartered in 1989, specialising in owner-managed and growing businesses. Following a career break Sue joined the team at Muncaster Castle as Accounts Manager until the formation of Westlakes Engineering in 2004.
Ron is an engineer with over 28 years experience in the Leisure Industry, for 22 years he has been an Inspector Engineer carrying out annual inspections on all types of amusement rides and attractions around the world. He joined the Attraction Safety Department in 2017.
Lisa is a Chartered Civil Engineer with 20 years’ experience in civil and structural engineering from concept through to detailed design.
The majority of Lisa’s experience is in the nuclear sector, but also includes the water industry.
Tom is a Chartered Mechatronic Engineer working with control systems and electrical safety since 2008 on equipment ranging from heavy rotating industrial machinery to rides control systems. He joined Westlakes Engineering in 2020 and has worked in locations across the UK and the world.
