Sellafield’s Box Encapsulation Plant Product Store – Direct Import Facility (BEPPS DIF) was the largest ever commission for Westlakes Engineering, leading the Civil, Structural and Architectural Design Team for the construction of BEPPS DIF.

The team worked on Sellafield’s major project that was to enhance the existing plant to provide safe and secure storage for up to 100 years.  The plant will initially receive Intermediate Level Waste in 3 metre cubed boxes.

Westlakes scope of work included:

• Civil and Structural Design for both concept and detail design phases.
• Development of the Civil Structural aspects of the model and discussions surrounding clash detection with the other disciplines.
• Assisted the temporary works Co-Ordinator by taking on the Temporary Works Supervisor role.

December 2023 saw the newly opened facility receive it’s first box of nuclear waste, which is paving the way for clean-up of one of Sellafield’s oldest buildings.
