    Civil and Structural Engineering

Alice House, at St Clement’s Oxford, is a purpose-built development of managed student accommodation providing 140 studio bedrooms in two five storey blocks. Westlakes were appointed by Developer Newmark Developments as civil and structural engineers for the project.

The existing site was a public car park adjacent to the River Cherwell, partly in a flood plain and an EA Flood Zone 3. The scheme comprised the construction of two narrow, parallel buildings either side of a public right of way leading from St Clements Street to a footbridge over the river.

The drainage system was designed to prevent flooding of the site in a 1 in 100 year storm event including allowance for climate change.

[post_content] => With developer Watkin Jones and architect Falconer Chester Hall, Westlakes were the civil and structural engineer for this student accommodation tower, situated opposite Liverpool John Moores University campus occupying a prominent position on the approach to the city centre alongside the Churchill Way flyover.

The development provides 398 bedrooms over fourteen floors with the ground floor given over to retail and student support. The building is arranged around a courtyard which provides external amenity space and cycle storage.

Westlakes were responsible for the design of the insitu reinforced concrete frame and foundations as well as the design of below ground drainage which included stormwater attenuation beneath the courtyard.

[post_content] => With developer Watkin Jones and Manson Architects, Westlakes were the civil and structural engineer for this fifteen storey concrete frame on Holdenhurst Road. Providing 392 student bedrooms and over 2900m2 of academic space for Bournemouth University, the development replaces Finance House which previously occupied the site.

The design required significant transfer structures to accommodate differing column grids between the academic and residential use, as well as to bridge over areas at ground level to permit vehicle movement into the courtyards.

Sustainable drainage was provided in the form of a soakaway within the external area which eliminated any stormwater discharge to the public sewer.
