Civil, Structural Engineering, Flood Risk Assessment and Drainage Design

Westlakes were commissioned for Civil, Structural services, along with flood risk assessment and draining design for a new build mixed use development project at Denby Street Sheffield. The accommodation comprises 535 student accommodation beds, 75 private residential apartments, offices and cycle parking within two 6-storey buildings.

The site is positioned partially within an Environment Agency Flood Zone 2.  Westlakes completed a Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) for this site showing how flood risks could be mitigated.

[post_content] => Westlakes were the designers for flood damage remedial works at five sites around Cumbria to stabilise and support the existing carriageways following severe flooding events, the work was undertaken as part of a design and build contract. Remedial solutions comprised gravity retaining walls, piled retaining walls, strengthened earthworks including geogrid stabilisation and use of rock armour and ground anchors. Westlakes worked with Cumbria County Council to agree Approval in Principle for each scheme and provide Geotechnical Design and Geotechnical Feedback Reports.

These projects required close liaison with the Environment Agency and utilised soft engineering solutions such as woven willow spilling. Westlakes managed the Environmental Permitting process to enable the works to take place.

The success of these projects resulted in design works at two subsequent sites.

[post_content] => Westlakes provided Phase 1 Desk Study and Phase 2 Site Investigation services for this student residential development at Fishbourne Road, Chichester. Previous site uses and surrounding historical uses such as a petrol station were assessed through development of a conceptual site model and laboratory testing with subsequent risk assessment. Site works included trial pitting and cable percussive boreholes. Soakaway testing was also conducted and a flood risk assessment and drainage design prepared.
